The Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) is an entertainment media console that allows users to play their favorite games, watch Blu-ray movies, surf the Internet, view photos, listen to music and more. The HDMI cable, which the PS3 uses to transfer high-definition video from the console to an external device, can be connected to any type of screen, such as a television screen or laptop monitor. With the correct video port, adapter or video card, you can avoid purchasing a HD television and use your laptop as a playback device for your PS3.

Things You'll Need:

  • Hdmi Cable
  • Video Card Or Adapter For Non-Hdmi Ports

Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI port on your PS3 and the other end of the HDMI cable into your laptop's HDMI port. If your laptop does not have an HDMI port, you will need to identify the video port of your laptop and purchase an adapter or video card that allows you to connect via HDMI. The most popular video ports on laptops are VGA, DVI, HDMI and composite S-Video.

Turn on your laptop once the HDMI cable has been connected. Powering on your laptop before turning on your PS3 console will allow the console to recognize the video output.

Power on your PS3 by holding the "Power" button for four to six seconds. You should hear one beep for the initial power-up and a series of two quick beeps after you have held the power button for four to six seconds. Release the power button after you have heard the two quick beeps.

Wait for your laptop screen to configure with the PS3 console. Most laptops should recognize the foreign device and sync the connection type and resolution automatically. If your laptop does not, consult your laptop manual and configure your video settings to accommodate the PS3 console.
