You can quickly make a costume of Alice from Alice in Wonderland with materials you probably have in your own home. There are 7 basic items you will need, and if you don't have one of them, each is quite easy to find or hack. Alice is an iconic character, created by Lewis Carroll and popularized by Disney and Tim Burton. Take a look at her evolution throughout the years.
Things You'll Need
- Light blue dress with sleeves
- White apron or pillowcase
- Sewing machine
- Petticoat or white sheet
- White tights or socks
- Black shoes
- Black headband
- Black marker
- Face paint
- Optional blonde wig
Establish the Base/Dress Layer of the Costume
First, go through your closet with an eye toward choosing a dress that will work for the costume. The best option is a light blue dress with a wide skirt and sleeves. A second option is a light blue shirt and skirt. Alternatively, take a trip to secondhand shops in your area to choose a base layer that will work.
Choose a White Apron, or Make One From a Pillowcase
The easiest option for the apron is to use one you already have. Alice wears a pinafore-like apron that covers the bottom and top of the dress. Any apron can be remade to fit the costume. If you start with a basic skirt apron, use the pillowcase to cut out a matching top section. Cut 2 and sew them right sides together around the two long sides and one short side. Turn the piece right side out and sew it to the bottom part of the apron. Also, cut 2 sash pieces to go around the neck and sew them together in the same manner, leaving one short end open so that you can turn the piece right side out. Iron. Attach the two short ends to the top of the apron.
Select or Make the Petticoat Layer
If you have a simple skirt in your closet that you can add a white ruffle to along the bottom edge, this will work perfectly for a petticoat. Cut 2 long sheet strips, each 4 inches wide. Sew them right sides together on 3 sides, and then turn the piece right side out and iron. Pin this ruffle strip to the bottom of the skirt pleating it as you go along so as to create a ruffle edge. If for some reason you need a longer strip, simply cut 2 more 4-inch-wide strips and follow the above directions again. Pin the two end pieces together and sew all the way around.
Select Shoes and Socks or Tights
For Alice's shoes, select a simple flat pair of black shoes. If you have the kind -- ones with the straps -- they are perfect. If not, once you put your white socks or tights on, use a black marker to draw a strap on the sock/tight material.
Accessorize the Costume and Put on Makeup
The main accessory for the Alice costume is a simple black headband. Depending on the style of Alice you are aiming for, decide how to do your makeup. Traditional Alice? Rosy cheeks, mascara, and a light eye shadow. Tim Burton Alice? White layer makeup and lots of blue eye shadow.
