A black and white screen when your PlayStation 3 is hooked up to your television may mean that your PS3 may not recognize there is an HDMI cable plugged in. You can fix your PS3 when it plays black and white by resetting the PS3 hardware and the PS3 console's default video output settings.
Things You'll Need:
- Ps3 Av (Composite) Cable
- Hdmi Cable
Unplug the PS3 power cord and the TV power cord. Insert the HDMI cable into the 'HDMI out' port on the back of the PS3. Insert the other end of the HDMI cable into the 'HDMI input' port on your TV. Plug in both the PS3 and TV power cords.
Connect the PS3 AV (composite) cable that came with the system to the PS3 and your TV. Do this by connecting the square black end into to the PS3 and the red, white and yellow end into the color-coded 'in' port on side or back of the television.
Turn on your PS3. If your TV screen is black and you have no picture from the gaming system, hold down the power button for 10 seconds, until you hear two beeps. This resets the hardware and sets the video output to the default composite cable. Turn the PS3 back on.
Change the input setting on your TV, using your remote, to composite. Hold down the 'On/Off' button on the front of the PS3 when the red standby mode light is on. The light will turn green and then return to red.
Turn on your PS3. Using your controller, move the cursor to 'System Settings' in the main menu bar. Select 'Display Settings,' then select 'HDMI.' Change the input setting on your TV to HDMI. Unplug the composite cable. The screen should now be color rather than black and white.
