Something as simple as paper can provide you and your child with hours of entertainment, including the ability to make an engineer's hat for someone who is interested in trains. If you have a child or friend interested in being a train conductor, you will be able to make a train engineer's hat with paper and basic craft supplies in order to get into the spirit of make-believe. Print out the paper template using your computer or draw an outline of the engineer hat onto stiff white paper. If you are printing the template, print it onto regular printer paper, then trace it onto the stiff paper. Cut a strip from the construction paper that is about 2.5 inches wide and as long as you need to wrap around the child's head.
Color and decorate the hat before cutting it out, using crayons, colored pencils, markers, paint or any other art supplies you have. Leave a space open to write the name of the child who will be wearing the hat when it is finished. You can color it with stripes like a train engineer's hat or use your own creativity to make it one of a kind.
Cut around the outline of the engineer’s hat slowly and carefully to be sure you only cut around the lines. Once it has been cut out, fold up the brim of the hat so that it points forward slightly.
Staple the strip of paper to one end of the hat, wrap it around the back of the hat and staple it the other end. The strip should remain loose enough so that the person who will wear the hat is able to slide it on and off easily.
