Trying to figure out how to use full-size fitted sheets on a queen-size bed is a problem that could keep you up at night. The sheets are close in size, but the queen is always longer and wider than the full and won't fit the properly. Know the proper dimensions before you go shopping for various bedtime accessories, such as comforters and blankets.

Sizing Them Up

Learn the sizes for full- and queen-size beds and their various accessories:

Beds

A full-size bed, which measures 54 inches wide and 75 inches long, is sometimes referred to as a double bed. A queen-size bed measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long.

Fitted Sheets and Mattress Pads

Full-size fitted sheets and mattress pads measure between 54 inches wide and 75 inches long, while the queen-size sheets and pad measure between 60 inches wide and 80 inches long.

Blankets, Duvets and Comforters

Full/queen blankets measure 90 inches wide and 90 inches long, and full/queen duvets measure 88 inches wide and 88 inches long. Full-size comforters measure 80 inches wide and 90 inches long; queen-size comforters measure 86 inches wide and 94 inches long; and full/queen comforters measure 88 inches wide and 88 inches long. Down comforters tend to come in one size, full/queen, which measures 90 inches wide and 98 inches long.

Sheets With Depth

Use deep-pocket fitted sheets on thicker mattresses or pillow-top mattresses. The standard fitted sheet measures between 7 and 12 inches in depth, but deep-pocket sheets measure between 13 and 17 inches in depth. If that's not enough, try extra deep, which measures 18 to 25 inches in depth.

For Good Measure

Queen-size comforter sizes aren't all created equal; instead, they vary in size according to their manufacturers. A comforter can range from 86 inches wide and 86 inches long to 92 inches wide and 96 inches long.

How to measure for a comforter:

  1. Measure the span from the floor to the top of your bed.
  2. Double that amount.
  3. Add the mattress' width to the doubled amount to calculate the maximum width of the comforter.

Kings and Queens

A queen-size comforter fits on a king-size bed, but a king-size comforter could overwhelm a queen-size bed.

King-size comforters are 110 inches wide and 96 inches long and are used on beds that measure 76 inches wide and 80 inches long. This could overwhelm your queen-size bed, which measures 60 inches wide and 80 inches long.
