How to Put Back Together 4-Band Puzzle Ring

The puzzle ring is often called a "Turkish Wedding Ring" because legend has it that it was used as a wedding ring in ancient Turkey. When a man wanted to divorce his wife, he would remove the ring, shake it so that the four intertwined rings would come undone, and proclaim, "I divorce you." While the ring has several names and stories associated with it, it is still a novelty ring, and is most often handmade of sterling silver or pot silver. The four "ringlets" are all different from one another, and with close observation, gentle and careful maneuvering, and a lot of patience, you can put one that has come apart back together again.

Identify each of the four ringlets: Ringlet #1 (single notch) has only one notch on either side of the vertex or central point. Ringlet #2 (double notch) is similar to Ringlet #1 but it has TWO notches on either side of the vertex. (Some styles of puzzle rings have a notch that is wider, deeper, and longer than the single notch and has no prominent vertex.) Ringlet #3 (smooth curve) has a straight line or bar across the top. Ringlet #4 (curly curve) has many curves and is very curly.

Hold Ringlet #1 in your right hand with the vertex or point facing right. Bring Ringlet #2 up so that its vertex is facing left; together, Ringlets #1 and #2 form a diamond shape.

Hold Ringlets #1 and #2 in the diamond shape and take Ringlet #4 in your left hand and rotate it clockwise so the curvey part is aligned with the shanks of the other two, while keeping Ringlet #3 out of the way. Keep Ringlet #2 facing left. Bring the left hand up to pinch with the thumb and index finger Ringlet #4 at the curvey part and both shanks of Ringlets #1 and #2. The right hand will then be free.

Hold Ringlets #1 and #2 in the diamond shape and #4 in the left hand. Use the free right hand to bring Ringlet #3 over the top of the diamond to your side of the ring. With the right hand, rotate Ringlet #3 over the index finger to close with Ringlet #4 to form a figure "8" that entraps the shanks of Ringlets #1 and #2.

Rotate Ringlet #1 downward. Ringlet #2 will be hooked under Ringlet #1. Rotate Ringlet #2 downward gently. Ringlets #1 and #2 will fall into place and result in the finished puzzle ring.


  • To prevent the ring from coming undone, wrap a thin piece of wire around the shank.


  • Some rings are made in a way that requires Ringlet #4 in Step 4 to be rotated in the opposite direction and Ringlet #3 turns over the thumb to form the figure "8."
