Hard Candy is a popular way to make unique favors for weddings and parties. There are hundreds of molds available on the market. However, you can make your own mold if you have a unique item that you would like to see in hard candy. Here are two ways to make molds. If you want details or need to make many pieces of candy, use the silicone plastique method. For smaller batches or one time use or for stained glass candy, use the foil method.
Mix equal parts of the two colors of the silicone together. Knead into a dough that is uniform in color. Roll or flatten the silicone between sheets of wax paper with either a rolling pin or your hands.
Rub a small amount of the silicone dough into the details of the piece being molded. The rolled dough should be twice as thick at the piece. You will have about 30 minutes to work while the dough will remain pliable. Press the item into the silicone dough and leave to cure for an hour at room temperature.
Carefully remove the item from the mold. Silicone molds can be used repeatedly. Food safe silicone can be used with butter, soap, chocolate, cheese and gelatin. It can frozen and heated to 450 degrees F without affecting texture.
Cut foil into desired shape such as a heart, tree or other simple shape. Make sure to cut the foil 1/2 inch bigger than the size you want the final product to be.
Fold up 1/2 inch sides of the foil. Seal edges with freezer tape for more stability taking care with corners to prevent leaks.
Gently pour in liquid candy. By pouring in two colors and lightly swirling with a toothpick, you can create beautiful a stained glass look.
Let candy harden and peel foil away. Foil molds are for one-time use only.
Make sure to store finished hard candy on a flat surface to prevent warping.
