How to Make Dining Room Chair Cushions. Buying cushions for your dining room chairs can be expensive and tiring. If you just can't seem to find the fabric you want, or you don't want to spend the money, do it yourself. Follow these steps to make your own chair cushions.
Lay the fabric wrong side up on the floor or on a large table. Use a fabric marker and straight edge to draw eight 17 inch squares and thirty-two 17 by 2 inch strips.
Cut out pieces using scissors or fabric cutter.
Piece and pin two of the squares right sides together. Sew three sides, 1/2-inch from the edge of the fabric.
Fold each long fabric strip lengthwise in thirds and sew down the middle to make ties for the cushions. Sew four strips to the open side of the square, using your own chairs as a guide. For example, sew the first strip at 3 inches, the second at 5 inches, the third at 11inches and the fourth at 13 inches.
Turn the square right sides out and slide the foam pad into it. Use extra pillow stuffing to fluff the cushion to your desired thickness.
Turn the remaining fabric edges in to hide the unfinished portion and pin sides together, closing the cushion.
Sew the back of the cushion with a sewing machine and use a hand needle and thread for anything you cannot do with the machine.
Repeat with the rest of the fabric pieces, tie cushions to your chairs and you are done!
If you are a beginning sewer, buy extra fabric in case of mistakes. Buy fabric that is sturdy but not too stiff-you want it to last but not be impossible to sew. Choose a solid or pattern, or half of each to make cushions reversible. Find foam cushion pads at any department store craft section or in an arts and crafts store.
