A delicates bag is used to protect fragile items from damage in the washing machine. It can be used for bras, panties, lingerie, baby socks and sweaters. If you know how to sew, making a delicates bag is an easy process that will take about a half hour to whip up. Since it is easy to make, a delicates bag can be a simple homemade present for every female on your gift list.
Cut two pieces of fabric measuring 1 1/2 feet by 1 1/2 feet. Lay one piece of fabric on top of the other so that the sides and corners match up.
Set your sewing machine to zigzag stitch and sew three of the four sides of the two pieces of fabric together. This will give you a sack shape.
Lay the ribbon on the unsewn edge of the sack and fold the edge over the ribbon, creating a pocket for the ribbon. This pocket will hold the drawstring to the delicates bag.
Pin the ribbon pocket with the straight pins just below the ribbon. Make sure not to pin the ribbon to the sack.
Cut a slit in the top of the pocket so that the ends of the ribbon can hang out. Sew the pocket where the pins are holding it closed. Make sure not to sew the ribbon. Remove the pins as you sew. Turn the bag inside out.
Tie a knot in the ends of the ribbon so that they won't slip out of the drawstring pocket.
Use ribbon that won't bleed in the wash. A grosgrain ribbon or satin ribbon will work well.
