How to Design a Hologram

Holograms are new developments in technology that create a realistic image in space.

A hologram is a pattern that is created through a photosensitive medium that is exposed to holography, then photographically developed to create a three-dimensional image to the human eye. This technology has offered artists and expressionists of today a vivid and special way to communicate a concept or idea to the public. Designing a hologram can be tricky, as these designs must be developed to reflect light in just the right way. Computer programs are needed to translate an image into a pattern that can be transformed into a hologram.

Start your design process using a computer program that works in layers, such as ImageReady, Photoshop or Corel Draw. These artwork programs allow you to design various layers of images that can be treated and turned into a hologram.

Compose the background layer of the three layers. This background layer should contain only two colors. Make this layer simple and able to support the other layers in color and dimension.

Design the foreground layer with three distinct colors that are different from the two background layer colors. This layer should have the bulk of your design concept on it. Save the file as a foreground layer as a JPG or GIF file.

Finalize the design with a floating layer of your hologram image with one separate color, different from the other layers. There should be six distinct colors total among the three layers. Use the floating layer to add any special information you did not list in your foreground layer.

Submit your design files to a professional firm that can treat the files to the processes necessary to make the image a hologram. Hologram artwork designs are an illusion. These images are simply reflections of light that fool the eye into seeing a three-dimensional image. It is impossible to give an accurate representation of a holographic image on a computer screen or paper printout, but the firm you use will verify your image integrity before it completes the process.
