The Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) game console is bundled with wireless controllers to give players complete freedom of movement while gaming. However, the wireless Sixaxis or DualShock 3 controllers must be charged periodically by connecting them to the PS3 console with a USB cable. Other controllers, such as the drum kit for “Guitar Hero” and the microphone controller for “Rock Band” are wired and are connected to either the PS3 USB ports or to USB sensors. All controllers can be used while connected to the PS3 console.

Sixaxis or DualShock 3

Connect the mini USB plug into the port at the top of the controller.

Connect the USB plug into any one of the PS3’s USB ports.

Press the power button on the PS3 or the “PS” button in the middle of the controller to start up the console.

Wired Music Game Controllers

Connect the USB sensor to any USB port on the PS3 console if using more than one instrument. Rock Band’s guitar and keyboard all have sensors with extra built-in USB ports. The USB sensor for Guitar Hero’s guitar controller has two built-in USB ports.

Connect the wired music controller to the PS3 or to the USB sensor. You may need to press the signal button to connect wirelessly to the guitar or keyboard controller if you're using a USB sensor.

Press the power button on the PS3 to boot up the console.

Tip

Switch controller assignment numbers by pressing the “PS” button to activate the XMB screen and then selecting a new controller number from the drop-down list.
