Building a bird house to attract our fine feathered friends is a great weekend project. Song birds are always welcome and other birds have beautiful colors to display. Bird watching is an event that can be enjoyed no matter what your age and once the bird house is finished there is no other expense. Whether you build the bird house or buy an unfinished one, you can stain or paint it yourself in a few easy steps.
Things You'll Need:
- Cloth
- Varnish
- Sandpaper
- Stain
- Shellac
Sand the wood with medium grit sandpaper to remove rough edges.
Sand the wood with fine grit sandpaper if you want a smoother finish.
Select a color for the stain. Stains are available in wood finishes or in colors.
Apply the stain with a cloth or brush. Wipe off any excess stain and allow it to dry.
Apply a second coat of stain if you want a darker color. The wood will become darker with each application.
Consider a colored stain of red or green for the roof. You may choose to keep the bird house one color or add a touch of color for the roof.
Protect the finished bird house with a wood sealer. Varnish or shellac in a clear finish will guard the wood from nature’s elements.
Tip
The amount of sanding is left up to individual preference or sanding can be completely skipped.
