How to Pick Baby Bib Fabric

By Donna Pullen

When choosing baby bib fabric there are several things to consider. It is best to choose fabrics that are comfortable, durable, waterproof, and most of all fun.

Use these steps as a guide when choosing baby bib fabric.

The first step when choosing baby bib fabric is deciding what features are most important. For some, it may be absorbancy. In this case 100% cotton would be the best choice. Cotton not only absorbs well, but is soft and comfortable against baby's skin. Other cotton fabrics that would be suitable are terry cloth or flannel.

Another option would be vinyl. Vinyl is probably one of the easiest to clean, and least costly, but offers no absorbancy. Vinyl is also the least comfortable against baby's skin. On the other hand, vinyl can usually just be wiped clean. Most vinyls cannot withstand the high temperatures of the dishwasher or the heat of the dryer and may become brittle over time.

One of the most durable baby bib fabrics is made of 100% polyester. This waterproof fabric is similar to vinyl, but is stronger and more durable, resists stains and odors, and can withstand the high temperatures of the dishwasher and dryer. This fabric may also be harder to find locally and may need to be ordered online. This fabric would be similar to the softer shower curtains.
