Pinafore aprons can protect your little girl’s nice dresses before or after special occasions or events, or while eating. The method outlined here to make your own pinafore aprons is very simple, even if you are not an experienced sewer, and can be completely customized to match the child’s dress. It is intended to fit children ages 5 to 8 years old. However, the pattern is simple enough to be modified for any size, including teens and adults.

Wash and dry the fabric, and iron it. Spread the fabric out flat in a single layer.

Use the measuring tape to measure a 9-inch square in one corner and use scissors to cut this piece out.

Measure and cut a 27-inch square from the rest of the fabric.

Fold the fabric over by 1/4 inch and sew it to create a hem on three sides of each of the fabric squares.

Measure and cut two 18-inch lengths of ribbon.

Sew the end of one ribbon to a hemmed corner of the 9-inch square, and the end of the other ribbon to the opposite corner on the same side. This will be the bib part, and the ribbons will form the straps that go over the shoulders.

Center the remaining length of ribbon on the unhemmed edge of the 27-inch square of fabric, and sew it in place.

Sew the 9-inch square and the 27-inch square of fabric together, with the unhemmed edge of the 9- inch square centered beneath the ribbon.

Wrap the pinafore around the child and tie it in the back, pulling the ribbon shoulder straps over the shoulder. Mark the places where they meet the waist ribbon in the back with a pencil.

Use needle and thread to sew a button on the waist ribbon at each of these spots.

In each of the shoulder ribbons, create corresponding button holes by cutting a small slit in the ribbon that is just big enough to allow the button to pass through. Sew around the edges of the button hole with a needle and thread to prevent fraying.
