How to Make Homemade Clay From Flour

You can easily make homemade clay using everyday items already stocked in your kitchen cupboard. Because this clay is all-natural, you can use your cookie cutters to form it into fun shapes that the kids can decorate with acrylic paints and glitter glue.

Things You'll Need:

  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Food Coloring
  • 2 Tsp. Vegetable Oil
  • 2 Cups Water
  • 6 Cups Flour
  • 1 Cup Salt

In a large mixing bowl, slowly mix together 6 cups flour, 2 cups water, 1 cup salt and 2 teaspoons vegetable oil. Mix and knead until you get a putty-like consistency.

Add food coloring to the clay at this point if you wish. You can break off hunks of clay to make several different colors from one batch. Add food coloring slowly and knead it into the clay thoroughly before adding more color — some of the darker pigments may only require a drop or two.

Start using the clay right away or if it is too soft to hold shapes, refrigerate it for a couple of hours to firm it up.

Air-dry clay objects — it may take several days — or bake them on a cookie sheet for an hour at 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

Store leftover clay in the refrigerator. Simply moisten it with water and place it in a plastic storage bag.

Slowly add the water in to make sure the mixture does not get too watery. If it does, sprinkle in some more flour.
