You can make brightly colored pompoms out of plastic tablecloths. Because these pompoms are made from plastic material, they will last much longer than tissue paper pompoms. Plastic tablecloth pompoms can withstand exposure to water and still maintain their shape and color. This is an inexpensive craft because plastic table cloths can be purchased for very little at party supply stores. You only have to make these pompoms once, as they will store well for long periods of time.

Things You'll Need:

  • Scissors
  • String
  • Marker
  • Yard Stick
  • Plastic Tablecloth

Lay a plastic tablecloth on a flat surface. Smooth it to remove any wrinkles. Use a yardstick to measure as many 20-inch-by-30-inch rectangles as you can on the surface of the tablecloth. Draw the measurements onto the tablecloth with a marker.

Cut the rectangles out with a pair of scissors. Stack the rectangles on top of one another. Make sure all their edges are even. Fold the stack of rectangles into 1 1/2-inch-wide strips, starting from one of the shorter edges. Alternate the direction of the folds to create accordion-like pleats.

Wrap a piece of string around the center of the folded rectangles. Tie the strings ends together into a knot to secure the folds. Cut the two sides of the folded rectangles equally to adjust the size of the pompom. Cut the two ends into a rounded or pointed shape, depending upon personal preference.

Spread the plastic tablecloth layers apart on either side. Spread each layer's folds to fluff the pompom and fill it out. Hang the pompom by the tails of its string.

Tip

Cut apart two different-colored tablecloths and alternate the colors when stacking the rectangles to create a multicolored pompom.
