Make a Glockenspiel

How to Make a Glockenspiel. A glockenspiel is a German percussion instrument that is similar to a xylophone. The difference between the two is that the glockenspiel's bars are made out of metal and the xylophone's are made out of wood (giving the glockenspiel a metallic sound). Make your own tubular glockenspiel right at home by following these simple steps. It may be hard to pronounce, but playing your homemade glockenspiel will be a piece of cake.

Measure and mark the electrical metallic tubing pipe into 8 separate lengths: 11-inches, 10 1/4-inches, 9 3/4- inches, 9 1/2-inches, 8 7/8-inches, 8 1/2-inches, 7 7/8-inches and 7 5/8-inches.

Use a metal pipe cutter or hacksaw to cut the 8 lengths of pipe that you have measured and marked in Step 1.

Put the tubes of pipe in order starting from the shortest one on the top ending with the longest piece of pipe on the bottom.

Tie the tubes of pipe together (leaving exactly 2 inches in between them) using a piece of string on each side and making knots around each separate pipe. Or, you can just lay the tubes 2 inches apart in the same order as mentioned in Step 3 on 2 pieces of felt or foam rubber (one piece of felt or rubber underneath each side of the pipes).

Take a wooden, metal or plastic mallet and tap out a beautiful melody on your new glockenspiel.

Warning

Use caution when handling the hacksaw to prevent injury.
