- Black permanent marker (optional)
Creating a cardboard trophy is an inexpensive way to make a reward for an event. For young children participating in a school or camp field day, the cardboard trophy makes for an effective prize for winners in events. For adults, the trophy can serve a different purpose by representing a gag reward, such as rewarding the winner of a fantasy sports league with the league's official trophy and the team that finishes last place, with the cardboard trophy to be displayed as punishment until the start of the next season.
Trace around top of the cup on a piece of cardboard.
Cut out the cardboard circle.
Draw a right triangle on the cardboard, with the long side that is part of the right angle as long as the cup is tall and the short side as long as the cup's diameter.
Draw a rounded shape on the inside of the right corner, then draw a second triangle inside the first triangle, approximately 1 inch in from the sides as long and wide as the cup, but not the hypotenuse.
Cut out the triangle shape, then cut off the rounded corner and inner triangle to make a handle.
Hold the handle over the side of the cup and trim the edges from the long side of the triangle, if needed, to match the shape of the cup. As most cups taper from the mouth to the base, this trim is required for the handle to sit with its top edge parallel to the top and bottom of the cup.
Trace the handle onto the cardboard and cut out a second handle.
Paint the handles, cardboard circle, cup and toilet paper tube. Gold, silver, bronze or yellow are good colors for a trophy.
Glue one end of the toilet paper tube to the center of the cardboard circle and glue the handles to the sides of the cup, with the two handles directly opposite each other. This creates the base and cup of your trophy, respectively.
Glue the bottom of the cup to the top of the toilet paper tube to combine the base and cup.
Decorate the front of the cup with permanent marker, including the position and event, if desired.
