Owning silver flatware or jewelry truly is a gift and makes any occasion more special. Silver is a delicate material, however, and can easily tarnish just from contact with water or materials like chamois leather. Silver jewelry, if worn frequently, also can quickly become covered with grime from sweat, body oils and dirt. Luckily, you don't need to resort to purchasing a fancy and overpriced silver polish to remove such stains.
Combine 2 tsp. of liquid dish washing soap with 1 tsp. of household ammonia in a small container with a plastic spoon. Add 1/4 cup water and mix well.
Dip a cotton ball in the mixture and rub it against your piece of silver. Scrub off all accumulated dirt and stains. Rub the piece of silver dry with a facial tissue.
Soak the piece of silver in a container filled with rubbing alcohol. This will remove stubborn stains and tarnish. Leave the silver piece in the container for several minutes.
Remove the piece from the alcohol bath and wipe it down with a soft, lint-free cloth.
