How to Apply for "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition"

Help a family get a new look for their home.

If you know a deserving family that's facing dire straights, help them apply to be on the hit ABC show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." In addition to a complete home makeover, the featured family often receives other benefits such as scholarships. The featured family may also receive vehicles and professional assistance from ABC, sponsors and the "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" crew.

Download the "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" application from Required information includes the family members' names, the address of the house and the household income. You must also make note of the family members' community service, the type of property and any debt or criminal or lawsuit activity. You'll also need to write about the reasons the family and their home deserve to receive services from "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition."

Compile a video of the inspirational family, in addition to providing photos of the family and house. The video serves as a tour of the house and an introduction to the family. Each member of the household must be on camera and speak at least once. The video should be about 5 to 10 minutes long. ABC prefers that you upload the video to a file-sharing site such as YouTube or YouSendIt with private links. If this is not possible, ABC accepts videos in other formats. These include DVD, VHS and mini DVD formats. ABC does not accept VHS-C or High 8 movies. You can apply without a video, but recent pictures of the house as well as all members of the household are required.

  • Make a copy of your video if you are sending a tape, as it will not be returned to you. You can apply on behalf of a family you don't know, such as a family you may have heard about on the news. Supply whatever information you can, and if ABC is interested, they will track the family down.


  • "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" receives thousands of applications each week. For this reason, ABC will only contact families they are interested in. It may take several months for ABC to contact any families they are interested in, so be patient.
    The video and photos you submit will become the property of Lock & Key Productions, as will anything else you submit with your application. Do not send any original paperwork or items with sentimental value.
