Darts is a game played with a round board divided into 20 equal areas and concentric circles. The goal is to use darts to score points by throwing the darts into different areas of the board. It is a game played in pubs and bars around the world and played in competitive arenas governed by the World Darts Federation. There are specific rules regarding the height and distance of the board in competition.

The dartboard should hang 68 inches from the center of the board's bullseye to the floor. Dartboards may be hung in two different ways--from the center of the board and from the top of the board. If your dartboard is hung from the center, measuring is easy. If the board is hung from the top, make sure you measure accordingly.

The distance from the throwing line to the board differs according to the type of dart tip you are using. If you are using steel-tipped darts, then the distance from the face of the board (not the wall) to the throwing line is 7 feet, 9 ¼ inches. If you are using soft tip darts, then the distance from the face of the board to the throwing line is 8 inches.

The throwing line is the line behind which a dart thrower must stand during a match. The throwing line should be 3 inches wide and directly in front of the board. It can be marked by a piece of tape, and the thrower can be no closer to the board than the front edge of the tape.

Dartboards.com recommends you ensure the protection of the wall where the dartboard is hanging, especially if you are using steel-tipped darts. You can use a backboard, such as cork, or place the dartboard in a cabinet, to give your wall protection. A suggested playing area is about 6 feet long, with the dartboard in the middle. They also recommend making sure that there are no breakable objects within 2 to 3 feet of either side of the board, as darts can bounce if they do not hit the board properly.

Floor Protection

Where you play is important to the floor and the dart. Dartboards.com recommends using a dart mat to protect the floor. Harder floors like concrete, stone and tile can break or dull the dart points. Steel-tipped darts can poke holes in floors like wood and vinyl. And while carpet protects the floor from the darts, you can put a wear pattern in the carpet going back and forth to the board, if you play on a regular basis.
