When teaching children between the ages of 3 and 5, using crafts helps drive home the point of the lesson. For example, if you are teaching children about the Bible, using crafts helps the children learn the Bible lessons while having fun making things with their hands.
Noah’s ark is a well-known Bible story. To help your children learn the story, let them make animal-themed crafts. Make brown paper-lunch-bag puppets of the different animals, decorating them with construction paper and markers. Another option is egg carton animals. Cut the cups off the carton to use as the animal’s body. Then decorate the cartons with yarn, cotton balls and markers.
Adam and Eve
Another memorable Bible story is the story of Adam, Eve and the serpent. Thumbprint crafts can depict the story. Give the children inkpads. Have them press their fingers into the ink and then onto a piece of paper to create different things from the story, such as the serpent or the apple tree. Another idea is creating snakes out of beads and pieces of yarn.
Easter and Christmas Crafts
During the Christmas or Easter holiday, create crafts for the children to help them learn the meaning of the holidays. During Christmas, let the children create mangers out of the cups from an egg carton. Or make crosses for the Easter holiday using popsicle sticks, and have the children decorate them with acrylic paints. Another idea is to make stained glass pictures of holiday symbols, such as eggs for Easter or a decorated tree for Christmas. Use parchment paper and markers to make the stained glass images. Then hang them on the window to let the light shine through.
The fish is a symbol of Christian religions. Design different crafts that involve the fish. One idea is to use fishing wire and beads to make a fish shape. Another idea is to use old CDs for the body and construction paper for the fins. A third fish craft idea is making a fish out of a paper plate. Alternatively, use an empty, 20-ounce plastic bottle to make a fish. Cut off the end of the bottle and staple the cut edge to make the tail fin for the children. Then, let them paint the fish to decorate it.
