Tea cozies are made to insulate tea as it is brewing in the tea pot. They are made out of cloth or yarn, and have layers of insulating material to keep the contents of the teapot warm. Some tea cozies are covered in elaborate decorations using embroidery, beading and other techniques. Tea cozies can be used to keep hot tea warm while serving it to your guests indoors, or to keep tea warm at an outdoor tea party. It can be easy to make a simple tea cozy that you can decorate any way you want.
Make your pattern for your wrap around your teapot cozy by using the fabric and pins. Place one piece of fabric on each side of the teapot, and pull the fabric on both sides together. The finished side of the fabric should be facing the pot.
Pin the fabric 1/2 inch from the edge of the fabric with the fabric in the hole of the handle, so the fabric holds in place as you create the pattern.
Skip over the handle and pin the fabric from the handle to the top of the pot just below the lid. Pull the fabric loosely around the teapot, so it will fit the teapot when it is sewn together. Leave a 1/2-inch gap of fabric between the pins and the pot to give you plenty of room for the seams.
Pin the fabric from under the handle to the bottom edge of the pot.
Wrap the fabric around the pot to the part of the pot where the tea pours out. Pin the fabric together at the bottom of the pot up to the tip of the spout.
Skip over the spout, and pin the fabric to the top of the pot just below the lid. Cut the fabric around the spout1/2 inch away from the pins. There should be about 1 inch of fabric between the cut edge and the teapot.
Trim the fabric above the top of the tea pot 1 inch above the lip of the lid.
Trim the fabric on the side of the pot with the handle so that it is 1 inch away from the teapot.
Cut off excess fabric at the bottom of the pot 1 inch past the bottom of the teapot.
Remove all of the stick pins. Place one piece of the cut fabric finished side down onto a piece of uncut fabric that is facing finished side up. Pin the pieces of fabric together. Repeat this procedure with the other piece of cut fabric. Remove the stick pins.
Pin the two original cut pieces finished side down on the batting. Cut the batting to the shape of the original pieces. Once you finish cutting the batting, remove the stick pins and place the original cut pieces to the side. Trace the outline of the tea cozy all the away around the edges you pinned and the top 1 inch in from the edge. Cut the 1 inch edge off of the batting all the way around.
Place the fabric into two stacks with the finished side of the fabric facing inward on both pieces of fabric. Pin the pieces in one stack together. Sew the pieces that you pinned together leaving a 1/2-inch seam all the way around except for the bottom. Leave the bottom open. Turn the sewn pieces finished side out.
Slide the batting into the tea cozy.
Fold the bottom edge inside the hole and stitch the end closed with a needle and thread.
Cut the ribbon 1 inch from the top edge of the tea cozy and pin it into place. Sew the ribbon onto the cozy.
Place the second side of the cozy, so the top of the handle side of the cozy pieces are 1/2 inch apart. It’s OK if the bottom parts overlap. Slide the ribbon over the top and pin it into place. Sew the ribbon onto the cozy.
Put the cozy around the teapot and tie the ribbon at the top. This should hold the two pieces in place.
Place a second piece of ribbon 1 inch from the bottom of the teapot and pin it to hold the bottom against the teapot. Tie the ribbon in place.
Place a ribbon around the bottom of the spout and pin it into place. Tie the ribbon. Put a second ribbon 1 inch from the spout end of the tea cozy and pin in place. Tie the ribbon.
Place a ribbon on any other area that looks like it needs some support. If you have an odd-shaped teapot or a large teapot, it may need support in other areas.
Untie all of the ribbons and sew them into place. Once you are finished sewing on the ribbon, you can start using your tea cozy.
