Change the appearance of your ceramic sink by refinishing it with an enduring glossy enamel. Before you get started, understand an important point: Ceramic sinks will not accept primer or paint until they are abraded or roughed with sandpaper. Employ the right prep strategy or expect heavy shedding at some point in the future. Finish the sink with paint renowned for impressive durability, or water damage is likely to occur.

Things You'll Need:

  • Latex Spray Primer
  • Rags
  • Tack Cloth
  • Masking Paper
  • Acrylic Spray Enamel
  • Appliance Epoxy Spray Paint
  • Professional Painter'S Tape
  • Dropcloths
  • Trisodium Phosphate Cleanser
  • 180-Grit Sandpaper
  • Coarse Sponge

Use a sponge to clean the ceramic sink with trisodium phosphate cleanser. Rinse the sink with wet rags and allow it to dry for three hours.

Sand the ceramic sink with 180-grit sandpaper until it feels rough.

Wipe the sink with a tack cloth.

Protect areas adjacent to the ceramic sink by covering them with masking paper and tape. Place a dropcloth beneath the sink.

Coat the ceramic sink with latex spray primer. Don't hold the can too close to the sink. Maintain 8 inches between the ceramic surface and spray nozzle as you apply. Allow the sink to dry for three hours.

Warnings:

  • Never prime an unsanded ceramic surface, or the finish will flake. Don't paint an unprimed ceramic sink, or the finish will peel. Don't use latex paint to refinish a ceramic sink, or flaking will occur.
