Rebar is a carbon steel extruded bar most commonly used to reinforce concrete. It is also used by hobbyists for gardens and wire sculptures. Rebar corrosion leads to problems in these applications. In concrete rebar corrosion causes structural failure by cracking the surrounding cement. For recreational use rusty rebar is an eyesore. Painting rebar with an epoxy avoids these problems.
Things You'll Need:
- Wire brush or sandpaper
- Mineral spirits
- Clean cloth
- Newspaper or drop cloth
- Painter's tape
- Rebar epoxy spray paint
- Color spray paint (optional)
Clean the rebar of existing rust or corrosion. Use a wire brush or sandpaper to scrub the surface. Wipe down with a clean cloth and mineral spirits to remove any remaining residue.
Place rebar onto newspaper or a painter's cloth. If rebar is immobile, tape off the surrounding areas to protect from paint.
Spray the rebar with an epoxy spray paint. This coating is a primer that prevents rust and corrosion. Shake the paint well before use. Hold the spray can 10 to 12 inches from the rebar. Spray with a consistent, even flow, covering the entire surface completely. Allow the coating to dry completely.
Apply a coat of color spray paint if desired. Those who use rebar for gardens, decorations or wire sculptures will likely want a color other than the primer coating. Choose any color you wish. Apply this color in the same manner as you did the primer. Allow to dry completely.
Tip
Old plastic bags are useful for masking off areas while painting.
Warnings:
- Always use spray paint in a well ventilated area, away from any open flames.
