Carrots have proven to be among the more versatile vegetables around by successfully jumping from savory to sweet dishes for years. But the idea of using Bugs Bunny’s favorite food to make music is surely madness. Actually, it isn’t. Carrot clarinets are simple and quick to make, and produce a great sound.
Cut into the carrot to make a marker around an inch from the pointed end of the carrot.
Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure 187 millimeters from this point along the carrot. Make another small cut here.
Make another small cut for the thumb hole 22 millimeters along the carrot. Again, use a rule or measuring tape to ensure accuracy.
Flip the carrot over and cut after 39 millimeters, 54 millimeters and then 74 millimeters. Make the next cut after 97 millimeters, then 123 millimeters and finally 140 millimeters.
Slice off the two ends of the carrot at the points where you made the small cuts.
Insert a 12-mm drill bit into your drill.
Drill directly through the center of the character lengthways. Keep drilling until the drill bit emerges from the other end.
Take the 12-mm drill bit out and insert a 7-mm drill bit in its place.
Carefully drill through the side of the carrot where you made the seven small cuts earlier. Stop drilling once you arrive at the hollow section in the center of the carrot. You will now have six finger holes and one thumb hole for your carrot clarinet.
Take a few slices from the section of the carrot with the finger holes on it using a vegetable peeler. Do the same thing on the thumb-hole section.
Insert the clarinet mouthpiece into a small 12-mm tube. You could also use an alto-saxophone mouthpiece for your carrot clarinet; it will still be classed as a clarinet because the bore is cylindrical and not the conical bore of a saxophone.
Push the other end of the 12-mm tube into the smaller end of the carrot. You can also add a funnel to the end of your clarinet but this is purely personal preference.
