The quirky little robot R2-D2, with his rounded dome head and body that glides along the ground is an icon of the Star Wars movies. Recognizable to avid fans and many casual viewers alike, adding a cardboard R2-D2 as a room or party decoration is sure to grab attention. Save some money by creating your own cardboard cutout of the robot instead of purchasing an overpriced pre-made one. You can make them in a range of sizes depending on your desired use.
Print out a picture of R2-D2. For very large cutouts, visit a copy shop to do the printing for you.
Attach the R2-D2 picture to a piece of corrugated cardboard. Cover the cardboard with a layer of spray adhesive, which is quick drying and won’t damage the picture. Press the picture into place. Use a clean, dry glue roller to smooth out the surface, removing any air bubbles.
Place the cardboard onto a cutting mat and use a utility knife to carefully cut around the outline of R2-D2. Move the knife in an arc to cut around its domed head and swipe in straight lines to cut around its body.
Create a stand if you want R2-D2 to stand on its own. Cut a thick, tall piece of cardboard that extends from its head to the ground. Attach the cardboard strip with glue, on the back of R2-D2’s head. Bend the strip backwards until it touches the ground. Allow the glue to dry before propping up.
If you are comfortable with painting, you can draw the outline of R2-D2 onto the cardboard and paint in the details instead of using a picture. You’ll need silver paint for the head, white for the body, and blue for the details. Use high-gloss paint to mimic the shininess of the robot.
