According to the U.S. Copyright Office, people can jailbreak their own electronic devices and install third-party applications on them without fearing a lawsuit. You may want to jailbreak your PS3 so that you can play unofficial versions of popular games and install third-party applications.
Navigate to the PS3UPDAT.rar download Web page using your laptop's Web browser, then download the archive file and save it on your laptop's hard disk drive (see Resources).
Double-click the archive file, right-click on the "PS3UPDAT.PUPjail" file in the right pane and select "Copy" from the drop-down menu. Right-click inside any folder and select "Paste" from the drop-down menu to extract the file in that folder. Right-click the file and select "Rename" from the resulting menu. Delete "jail" from the file name and press "Enter" to save the changes.
Plug the USB stick in one of the laptop's USB ports. Your operating system recognizes the flash drive as an external storage device. Go to the "Start" menu, click on "All programs," select "Accessories" and click on "Windows Explorer" to open the file browser.
Use the Windows Explorer file browser to navigate to the external storage device, press "Ctrl" and "A" at the same time to select all files, and press "Ctrl" and "C" at the same time to copy them to the clipboard. Right-click inside a folder and select "Paste" from the drop-down menu. This action creates a backup of the USB stick.
Right-click on the drive assigned by Windows to the flash drive and select "Format" from the resulting menu. Select "Quick Format" and press the "Format" button to erase everything from the flash drive.
Go to the external storage device, right-click on the white space in the right pane, select "New" and click on "Folder." Type "PS3" and press "Enter" to create the folder. Open the PS3 folder and create another folder inside it, naming it "Update."
Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the location where you've extracted the PS3UPDAT.PUP file. Right-click on the file and select "Copy" from the drop-down menu. Go to the Update folder on your external storage device, right-click on the white space in the right pane and select "Paste" from the drop-down menu. Disconnect the USB flash drive from the laptop's USB port.
Plug the USB flash drive in the PS3's USB port. Turn the PS3 on, navigate to the "Settings" menu and select "System Update." Use the "Update via Storage Media" option to start updating the console with the PS3UPDAT.PUP file.
Select "OK" when you are warned that the console found Version 3.55-jb. Select "Install Update" to jailbreak the console. The console beeps four times and shuts down.
Press the "Power" button on your PS3 to turn the console on. Install a game or third-party app to test the jailbreak.
Warnings:
- Jailbreaking the console voids its warranty.
