How to Build a Bird Cage With Popsicle Sticks

A popsicle stick birdcage can be a fun decor item and a fun craft project with your kids. This birdcage is great for holding small shells or little fake feathered birds once you are done. You and your family can have a wonderful time building an entire aviary for your pretend feathered friends.

Things You'll Need:

  • Glue
  • Popsicle Sticks
  • Ribbon, Beads Or Other Embellishments

Create a frame for the base of the bird cage. Glue four popsicle sticks together by placing two parallel to each other. Drop a small amount of glue on the ends of these two sticks. Then place the other two popsicle sticks on top of these, but perpendicular to them. Drop a small amount of glue on the ends of these two sticks.

Create the sides of the birdcage. Place two popsicle sticks on a flat surface parallel to each other. Apply a small amount of glue on the ends of four or five popsicle sticks. Attach these sticks on top of the sticks you laid out. Space the sticks so that there is a gap between each one. You will need to make a total of four sides.

Connect the side frames to the bottom frame. Apply a small amount of glue to the ends of the four or five sticks on the side frame. Attach these to the sticks on the bottom frame. You will probably need to hold each side in place for about two minutes to allow the glue to set unless you are using a hot glue gun, in which case you will only need to wait about 20 seconds before the glue will support the weight of the side frame on its own.

Create the top of the bird cage. Glue four popsicle sticks together by placing two sticks parallel to each other. Drop a small amount of glue on the ends of these 2 sticks. Then place the other two sticks on top of these, but perpendicular to them. Drop a small amount of glue on the ends of these 2 sticks. You will have another square frame much like the frame at the bottom.

Glue four popsicle sticks together to form a pyramid. Apply glue to the ends of the four sticks. Attach these ends to the four corners of the frame you created so that they form an angle towards the center. Apply glue to the other ends of the four sticks. Attach the four sticks to one another. As with the sides, you may need to hold these sticks in place while the glue sets.

Embellish your birdcage with ribbon and beads or other your items you like by gluing these accessories into place.

Tip

If you want to place something in your birdcage, then you will need to make the bottom solid instead of an open frame. Using a glue gun for this project will necessitate more parent involvement in this project, but it will enable you to spend much less time holding popsicle sticks in place while you wait for the glue to set up.
