Things You'll Need
- Size 11 beading needle
- Waxed beading thread
- Size 8 seed beads
- 4mm bicone beads
The Russian spiral beading design creates a strong strand that you can use as a simple necklace or a strap on a handbag. Beading a Russian spiral is a simple, repetitive process, once you learn the technique. The appearance of the spiral design changes, depending on the shapes and sizes of the beads you select. Beginning and advanced bead weavers alike can appreciate the simple beauty of a woven Russian spiral strand.
Thread the size 11 beading needle with 3 feet of waxed beading thread. Pull the thread through the needle 14 to 16 inches. This is the tail thread. It will become the working thread as you bead.
Thread one size 8 seed bead to within 2 inches of the end of the working thread. Pass the needle around and through the bead several times to anchor it in place. You are anchoring the bead in lieu of knotting the thread.
Thread beads in the following pattern onto the thread; the size 8 seed beads are the "A" beads and the 4mm bicone beads are the "B" beads: one A bead, one B bead, two A beads, one B bead, two A beads, one B bead. Slide the beads to meet the anchor bead.
Pass the needle through the anchor bead and each successive bead to form a beaded circle, exiting the anchor bead. Pull the thread taut.
Add one B bead and two A beads onto the working thread. Slide the beads to meet the circle beads. The new beads will rest on top of the circle beads. Skip the next two beads in the circle adjacent to the anchor bead and pass the needle through the third bead. The third bead is the second A bead you added previously. Pull the thread taut.
Add one B bead and two A beads onto the working thread. Slide them to meet the beads in the spiral. Skip the next two beads in the circle and run the needle through the third bead from the bead your thread is exiting. This bead is the sixth bead you added previously. Pull the thread taut.
Add one B bead and two A beads onto the working thread. Slide them to rest against the beads in the spiral. Skip the next two beads on the circle and pass the needle through the next three beads. The next three beads are the last two beads on the circle and the first bead B bead added previously. You are now at the beginning of a new circle.
Repeat until the Russian spiral strand is the desired length.
