Make your own poncho to wear for quick errands and quiet walks, or use an elegant fabric to create a beautiful poncho for a formal night. The basic poncho pattern can be altered to fit any size using one simple measurement. Spend a weekend sewing this easy addition to your wardrobe and make ponchos to match your favorite outfits.
Measure the person who will be wearing the poncho. Measure from one wrist to the other wrist while their arms are up and out from their sides. This measurement, plus an inch will be the diameter of the poncho circle.
Tape sheets of newspaper together. Measure and cut a square using the measurement of the poncho. For example, if the measurement is 36 inches, cut a 36-inch square.
Fold the newspaper square into four equal squares. Tie the end of the string to a straight pin. Cut the string using the measurement of the poncho plus enough to tie around a pencil. Unfold the newspaper and place the straight pin in the center point. Using the string and pencil as a compass, trace the circle on the newspaper. Cut out the circle. Cut the circle in half.
Fold the poncho fabric with the right sides together. Place a half-circle poncho pattern on the fabric and pin. Cut around the pattern adding a half inch to the straight side. Repeat, using the lining fabric
Sew a 1/2-inch seam allowance along the straight edge of the poncho fabric. Open the circle and press the seams open. Repeat with the lining fabric.
Place the poncho circle, right side up, on a flat surface. Match the lining on top of the poncho circle with the right side down. Pin the edge. Sew a 1/2-inch seam allowance around the circle. Trim the excess off the seam close to the stitching.
Find the center of the circle on one side of the poncho. Using the compass, draw a 7-inch circle on the center of the poncho. Insert a few pins to stabilize the layers. Cut out the 7-inch circle through both layers.
Rip out the seam on both the poncho fabric and lining, 8 inches from the center circle, using the seam ripper. This is for the front neck opening.
Turn the poncho right side out and press the outer seam. Turn the circle and the neck opening in by 1/4 inch and pin. Top-stitch the poncho neckline.
Cut two pieces of the 1/4-inch-wide ribbon 12 inches long. Pin an end from each of the ribbons to each side of the neck opening on the inside top edge. Hand sew the ribbon ties in place.
Top-stitch rick rack around the neckline and bottom edge of the poncho for added embellishment.
