Things You'll Need
An area rug adds color and texture to your home, and if you have large scraps of fabric lying around, you can turn them into your own area rugs. Make rugs made from old clothes or from bedsheets, or simply buy fabric from the craft store to get a rug in the colors and textures that you want. Make your area rug into a unique object that can be used lovingly in your home for years to come.
Cut the fabric that you want to use into strips that are between1 to 3 inches wide using a pair of scissors.
Choose three strips and knot them together.
Braid the strips together until you have the length of rug that you want.
Knot the strips and cut off the excess.
Repeat Steps 2 through 3 to create another braid.
Lay the strips side by side so that the braid is visible.
Sew the strips together with a needle and thick thread, using an overcast stitch.
Repeat this process until the rug is as wide as you want it to be.
Leave long loose ends on each knot to create a fringe for your area rug.
Use fleece, jersey or any other nonfraying fabric for a smooth look to your area rug.
