How to Make Felt Banners

Things You'll Need

  • Felt in various colors
  • Yarn
  • Scissors
  • Fabric glue
  • Poster board (optional)
  • Pencil (optional)

Banners can be used as learning aids, for special occasions, or just to dress up a room. Felt is an easy textile for children to work with as it requires no hemming and is easy to cut with regular scissors. For smaller children, pre-cut the pieces and let their imaginations go wild.

Cut your felt into 8 inch by 5 inch rectangles. If you will be writing a message on your banner, cut enough of these felt pieces for each letter in the message.

Cut your letters and designs out of different colored felt. You can use the poster board to make stencils of your shapes to use on the felt.

Lay out your felt rectangles the way you want them to appear. Arrange your letters and shapes on the rectangles. Once you have your design how you like it, glue each shape in place on the rectangles.

Cut a small hole in the top corners of the felt 1/2 inch from the edge. Thread the yarn through the holes to string your banner. Tie a loop in each end of the yarn to hang the banner with.

  • Use beads and glitter to dress up your felt banner. Instead of rectangles, cut out large letters to spell your message and string those.

  • Supervise young children that are using scissors.
