Things You'll Need
- Lightweight cardboard
- Black construction paper
- Stick glue
- White paint pen
Make these ants for a bulletin board that welcomes students back to school and highlights the new school year for learning. You can place these easy to make ants all over your bulletin board with each student's name printed on them. Create a picnic theme with a disposable red and white checked tablecloth for the bulletin board background and add images of books on plates and in baskets. Mark these books with an academic subject and your construction paper ants will look like they have eagerly come to a picnic of learning.
Draw a 3-inch circle for the ant head pattern, a 2-inch circle for the ant middle pattern and a 4-inch circle for the ant back pattern on the lightweight cardboard and them cut them out. Trace one of each circle on the black construction paper for each ant.
Place the ant's middle on your work surface. Apply stick glue to a 1-inch edge of the ant's middle 1/2 inch from the edge. Lay the ant's back over the glue on the ant's middle 1/2 inch and press. Apply the glue stick to the opposite span of the ant's middle in the same way. Lay the ant head over the glue on the ant's middle 1/2 inch and press it down.
Cut eight pieces of the black construction paper 1/4 inch wide by 1-1/2 inches long. These are the six ant legs and two antennae. Note: To make it easier, cut one long 1/4 inch wide strip and then cut the 1-1/2 inch lengths from it.
Place one end of one leg over one end of another leg and glue. Space the legs on the opposite end 1 inch apart. Repeat for two more sets of legs. Lay the ant body horizontally on your work surface. Apply a dab of glue on top of the connection of a pair of legs. Insert the connection under the ant's body 1/2 inch where the ant head circle and the ant's middle circle connect. Apply a dab of glue on top of the connection of another pair of legs. Insert the connection under the ant's back circle 1/2 inch from the middle circle. Apply a dab of glue on the top connection of the last pair of legs. Insert the connection under the ant's back circle 1-1/2 inches from the middle legs.
Apply glue to one end of each antenna and insert under the head and 1/2 inch at the 10 o'clock and 11 o'clock positions.
Print a child's name across the ant's body using the white paint pen. Make circle dots on the points of each letter.
For added dimension to your ant bulletin board, add 1/2 inch wide black pom poms to the top of each ant antenna.
