A colander is a kitchen tool that allows you to drain fluids from a pot, pan or other container without dumping the solids from that container into the sink. These tools are inexpensive and easy to find, however, sometimes you can't find your colander when you need it. Fortunately, an easy colander can be made quickly with things you have lying around the house.
Bend a wire hanger using a pair of pliers to create a loop. This will be the frame for your colander. Then pinch closed the hook of the hanger using your pliers to create a handle. Wrap the handle with electric tape to protect your hand from heat and to provide a more solid handle to hang on to.
Place a pair of thigh high pantyhose inside the wire loop. Then roll the open end of the hose over the wire frame to create a net. Keep rolling the pantyhose over the wire frame until you only have about 6 to 8 inches of the hose sticking out of the bottom of the frame. Secure temporarily with electrical tape.
Sew the pantyhose securely to the perimeter of your wire frame. Loop the stitches around the wire frame to keep the hose from pulling away or tearing away from the frame.
Use your homemade colander with care. After each use rinse it out and hang it up to dry.
