Things You'll Need
- Measuring tape
- Sewing machine
Hanging a kitchen towel on the oven door can be handy, until it falls on the floor or is dragged around the house by the children or dog. Keep your towels in place using a button or Velcro; this is an old-fashioned idea with a new twist. Instead of using a crocheted top for your towel, use fabric or pot holders to finish the look. These are great in your own kitchen, or make a few to give as gifts.
Continuous Roll Towel
Measure the width of your kitchen towel. Cut a section of Velcro to match the measurements. A section includes both sides of the Velcro.
Pin the soft side of the Velcro to one end of the towel on the back. Pin the scratchy side of the Velcro to the other end of the towel; this one should go on the front of the towel.
Sew the Velcro in place, using a thread color that matches the towel. Remove the pins as you sew.
Loop the towel around the handle of the oven, matching the Velcro pieces.
Potholder Kitchen Towel
Fold your towel in half and press the fold so it is easily seen when unfolded. Fold your potholder in half and press along the fold as well. When folding the potholder, make sure the loop is at the top and the design is on the outside.
Unfold the towel and sew a gathering stitch along the fold line. You can use a machine or hand stitch. Gather the towel until it is the width of your potholder. Most potholders measure roughly 6 inches across.
Lay your towel on the table and place the potholder on top of the gather line; the fold should go in the same direction as the gather.
Sew down the middle of the potholder, being sure to sew the towel as well. You may want to go over the line several times with the needle and thread to make sure it is secure.
Sew a button to the side of the potholder opposite the loop. The button should be on the decorative side of the potholder.
Put the potholder on the oven handle by bringing the potholder up from the bottom. Pull the loop over the button to keep it in place.
Use seasonal towels to brighten up your kitchen.
