A top hat makes a wonderful accessory to many costumes. Whether you're dressing up as a leprechaun, Abe Lincoln, or a Victorian man, the top hat can make or break the costume. Unfortunately, authentic top hats are expensive and hard to come by. However, with a little bit of cardboard and tape, you can make an inexpensive top hat that looks great with your costume. Plus, when you make your own top hat, you are free to make it any color and jazz it up any way you want.
Cut out a piece of cardboard that is 12 inches tall and as wide as the circumference of your head. Tape the two 12-inch sides together. This will form the main body of the hat.
Cut out a circle of cardboard that has a diameter of 14 inches. Cut out a smaller circle in the middle of this cardboard circle. The smaller circle should have the same circumference as your head.
Tape the small circle to one end of the main tube of the hat, forming the top of the hat. Tape the remaining ring of cardboard around the other end of the main tube of the hat, forming the brim.
Spray paint the hat black, including the bottom and edges of the brim.
Cereal boxes make a great material for this craft. You may substitute construction paper for the cardboard.
