Start by casting on 50 stitches for the ribbing. The first four rows will all be knit with the same pattern and the same set of stitches. Knit 2, purl 2, knit 2, purl 2 back and forth for four rows. A change in pattern starts on row 5 and continues changing until it is finished.
Row 5: Start this row by "knitting" 6 stitches. Then follow with a pattern of purl 2, and knit 2 until you are 6 stitches from the end of the row. Knit those last six stitches. Row 6: Start this row differently than row 5. This time you will "purl" 6 stitches. Then knit 2, purl 2 until you are once again 6 stitches from the end. Purl those 6 last stitches. Row 7: Repeat row 5.
Row 8: Continue the pattern by "knitting" 8 stitches, followed by purl 2, knit 2, until there are only left 8 stitches of the end of the row. Knit those 8 stitches. Row 9: Start the row with "Purl" 8, then knit 2,and purl 2 until there are only left 10 stitches on the row. Purl those last 8 stitches. Row 10: Repeat row 8.
Row 11: Knit the first 10 stitches, then purl 2, knit 2, until there are only 10 stitches left at the end of the row. Knit the 10 stitches. Row 12: Purl 10, knit 2 and purl 2, until there are only 10 stitches at the end of the row. Purl those last 10 stitches. Row 13: Repeat row 11.
Row 14: Knit 12 stitches, purl 2, knit 2, until there are 12 stitches at the end. Knit those 12 stitches.
Follow the pattern until you no longer can knit 2 or purl 2, but are only able to knit in rows of either all knit or all purl. Finish by knitting the last row and then bind off. Your hat is finished.
