Adults can enjoy party games just as much as kids. Not only will a goofy activity liven up a dull gathering, it will also serve as an icebreaker for shy guests. Adult games are designed to loosen inhibitions and initiate conversation, which can turn an ordinary party into a memorable experience.
If you have a creative group, this game can quickly become silly fun. Choose one person to leave the room. The remaining guests choose a famous person for the absent guest to become when she re-enters. Once everyone is back together, the group begins asking questions of the player in the style of a press conference, pretending that she is the famous person the group chose. The object of the game is for the player to guess which famous person he or she is supposed to be. The more outrageous the questions, the goofier this game can become.
This game requires a bit of advanced warning, but the end result is an entertaining conversational game for strangers. Before the party, have each person think up three facts about herself. Two of these facts should be true, and one false. Once the party begins, each guest takes turns presenting their statements, attempting to pass all of them off as factual. The other players get to decide which statement is a lie. With this icebreaker, you can learn a few things you didn't know about your acquaintances, and maybe a few things you didn't want to know.
Don't Say "No"
You'll need a collection of supplies for this game, but you'll likely be able to find something suitable around your house. Start the game by giving each guest an item. It can be a cheap necklace, a lei, a clothes pin or something similar. Throughout the evening, guests will try to win each player's item by coaxing him into saying the word "no" during conversation. Those who lose their items to other players can still participate in an effort to collect an additional supply. The guest with the largest collection of items at the end of the evening is the winner.
Test your friends' flexibility with this goofy game. Link a pair of belts together to form a large circle. Place the belts on the ground and have each player pair off with a partner and stand back-to-back inside the circle. The object of the game is for the pair of guests to get the belt over their heads. You can make the process more difficult by not allowing the use of hands. Be sure to play this game in an open area, because it could get destructive.
Games with a Hula Hoop
Hula hoops don't normally come to mind when planning an adult party, but they can lead to some crazy outdoor fun. With a hula hoop, you can set up unconventional twists on activities, like rolling for distance, a ring toss or timed spinning with single or multiple hoops. For a real challenge, see how many of your guests can fit inside a single hula hoop.
A Close Shave
This messy game will test couples' familiarity and communication skills. Pair off the guests, with one male and one female in each group. Cover each man's face with shaving cream, then blindfold his partner and have her give him a one-minute "shave" with the spoon. Prizes go to the best and worst shaves.
