Bee keeping is an ancient practice that keeps bee colonies in specially crafted boxes where bees live and produce their honeycomb. Pioneers in the Smoky Mountains formerly used hollow trunk sections as their boxes for bee hives. However, you can use more modern materials for preparing your bee colony. Once the bees move in, you can collect honey, either for sale or for your own enjoyment.
Frame a bottom board for your bee hive using wood glue or nails. Cut the bottom board from 3/4-inch plywood. The frame should be 22 by 16 1/4 inches in dimension with a thickness of 1 7/8 inch. Use a router to cut a 3/8-inch slot through the two longer sides of the frame and one shorter side.
Build the deep hive body out of plywood. The deep hive body should measure 19 7/8 inches in length, 16 1/4 inches in width and 9-5/8 inches in height. Use wood glue or liquid nails to glue the frame together rather than painstakingly cutting a tongue and groove around all of the edges. Apply a 2-inch strip on the shorter sides of the frame to use as handholds.
Construct the Dadant style honey super module. This frame should measure 19 7/8 inches in length, 16 1/4 inches in width and 6 5/8 inches in height. Use the liquid nails or wood glue to join the pieces together. Similar to the hive body, also use a 2-inch strip of plywood to construct handholds on both of the shorter sides of the frame.
Glue together the shallow super. This frame measures 19 7/8 inches in length, 16 1/4 inches in width and 5 11/16 inches in height. Glue a handhold on both sides of the shorter sections of the frame.
Construct the inner cover. This frame should measure 19 7/8 inches in length, 16 1/4 inches in width and 5/8 inches in height. Glue a 3/4-inch plywood top to the inner cover as well. Use a wood auger to drill a 3 1/2-inch hole in the top.
Construct the outer cover. The outer cover consists of two frames that are laid over each other. The inner frame should measure 20 1/4 inches in length, 16 5/8 inches in width and 1 1/2 inches in height. The outer frame should measure 21 3/4 inches in length, 18 1/8 inches in width and 2 1/4 inches in height. Cover the top of the outer frame with 3/4 inch plywood as well as a sheet of tin.
