Designing and building a go-kart is a fun project for the whole family to participate in. This type of project can help spark a child's imagination, as well as foster a keen interest in science and technology. The best part of the experience is getting to enjoy the thrill of driving your new go-kart with your family, providing them with hours of entertainment and joy.
Create a unique design for the frame of your go-kart and draw it up on paper. In this design make sure to include what building materials you will use, and how much of each material, so that you can stay organized.
Grab an old, unused lawnmower and carefully remove the engine from the lawnmower. Be very careful when removing the engine to avoid any injury or damage to the engine.
Build the frame of your go-kart by cutting the tubing down to fit your design. Once all of the tubing has been cut to the correct size, weld the pieces together as specified by your design.
Build the steering column next. The best way to make strong linkage for steering is to use 1/2-inch bar stock. Use two pieces of 3/4-inch bar stock to build the axles for your go-kart.
Carefully drill holes in the bar stock you used to make your rear axle and secure the assembly with cotter pins.
Weld the pulley you are using for your drive pulley directly to the axle, making sure that it lines up with the pulley that is connected to the lawnmower engine.
Take a flat, smooth, steel plate and use your welder to attach it to the back frame of the go-kart. Put the lawnmower engine on top of the plate and line up the pulleys. Once the pulleys are lined up you can attach the engine to the plate by drilling holes and using mounting bolts.
Take your hand cable and securely connect it to the throttle cable attached to the engine of the go-kart.
Cut some plywood down to fit the design of your cart and use the pieces to make the floor boards. Use some extra plywood to make seats for the inside of the go-kart.
